Birdwatching at Peninsular Malaysia

Day 1: Arrival and Birding at Kauala Selongor

Pickup from KL hotel in the early morning (6 am). Morning birding at Kuala Selangor Nature Park. Our target here will be Mangrove Blue Flycatcher, Laced Woodpecker, Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker, Malaysian Pied Fantail, Golden-bellied Gerygone, Swinhoe’s White-eye, Pied Triller, Common Flameback, Sunbirds (Brown-throated, Ruby-cheeked, Ornate), Blue-winged Pitta*.

In the afternoon, head to paddy fields near Kuala Selangor for Dusky Eagle-Owl, Buffy Fish Owl Spotted Wood-Owl, Malaysian Eared-Nightjar. Overnight at Kuala Selangor or Bukit Tinggi.

Day 2: Bukit Tinggi & Fraser Hills

Head up to Bukit Tinggi in the morning. Birding around the Japanese Garden for Mountain Peacock-Pheasant, Ferruginous Partridge, Orange-breasted Trogon, Red-bearded & Blue-throated Bee-eater, Black-thighed Falconet and other submontane birds. Head to Fraser’s Hill after lunch. If time permits, we can go birding at the Gap and Old Gap Road for submontane species such as Pin-tailed Parrotfinch, Black Laughingthrush and Bamboo Woodpecker.

Try for Malayan Partridge, Check in at Fraser’s Hill, night birding for Brown Wood-Owl, Mountain Scops-Owl. Overnight at Fraser’s Hill.

Day 3: Fraser Hills

Full day birding at Fraser’s Hill. We shall be looking for the Rufous-browed Flycatcher, Malayan Laughingthrush, Mountain Fulvetta, Barbets (Red-throated, Black-eared, Gold-whiskered, Black-browed, Sooty, Fire-tufted), Malayan Cuckooshrike, Streaked & Marbled Wren-Babbler, Blue Nuthatch, Rufous-bellied Swallow, Little Cuckoodove, Sunda Scimitar-Babbler among others. Night birding for Brown Wood-Owl, Mountain Scops-Owl (if any owl is pending from Day 2) Overnight at Fraser’s Hill.

Day 4: Fraser Hills & Taman Negara (Merapoh)

Morning birding at Fraser’s Hill. Then, depart for Taman Negara Merapoh. On the way down, birding at New Gap Road for Blyth’s Hawk-Eagle, Rufous-bellied Swallow, Hill Blue Flycatcher and Silver-breasted Broadbill.

If time permits, afternoon birding at Taman Negara Merapoh entrance area & canopy walkway for Rhinoceros Hornbill, Banded Kingfisher, various forest birds. A guide is not needed for birding at the entrance area.

Overnight at the nearby town of Gua Musang.

Day 5 & 6: Taman Negara (Merapoh)

Two Full day birding at Taman Negara Merapoh. Our target species includes the Great Argus, Malayan Peacock-Pheasant, Garnet Pitta, Malayan Banded-Pitta, Broadbills (Green, Black & Yellow; Black & Red, Banded and Dusky) Rhinoceros Hornbill, Bulbuls (Pretty much all species) Crested Jayshrike, Malkohas (Raffles’s, Chestnut-bellied, Black-bellied, Chestnut-breasted etc) Babblers, Trogons (Scarlet-rumped, Red-naped, Diard’s), Wren-Babblers (Large, Striped) and a variety of other lowland species. Night Birding for Frogmouths (Large, Gould’s & Blyth’s). Overnight at the nearby town of Gua Musang.

Day 7: Taman Negara (Merapoh) & Kaula lumpur Drop

Half-day birding at Taman Negara Merapoh (in the morning). Drop-off at Kaula lumpur in the afternoon. Tour ends. Return flight at night or hotel in KL at own expense.

7 Days Peninsular Malaysia: MYR 6950 per person
